How to be the Best Babysitter

Do you want to be your neighborhood’s best babysitter? Then you need to put in hard work in order to earn such a coveted title! If you prove to your families that you are great at watching their children, then you will be called often and you will make more money!

1) You need to know if you are cut out for the world of baby sitting. Do you consider yourself a mature individual that likes children?  Can you handle a large amount of responsibility? Are you good at time management? If you are a busy individual that does not have a flexible schedule or who prefers to fill any free weekend moments hanging out with your friends, then you need to reconsider whether or not you should have this job. It is fine to be busy but if you are serious about being a great babysitter, you need to make yourself available for interested families.

2) Once you know you have the time and the motivation to be a sitter, then you need to acquire the necessary skills. Take classes through your local community center or at the American Red Cross babysitting in your area. These courses teach you the basic about child development, how to care for children of different ages, what to do in an emergency, and how to interview for a sitting job.

3) Get the job! You need to let the families for whom you are interested in sitting that you are someone they should consider the next time they need to hire a care taker for the evening. Post your profile online on some babysitting websites or post fliers at a nearby elementary school or place of worship. Ask your parents to ask their co-workers. The more people you contact, the more likely you will be called!

4) When you go for the interview/ trial sitting, dress appropriately and demonstrate that you are a mature, responsible individual. Be yourself!

5) Once you have the job, make sure you do it well. If the children do not like you, you most likely will have a hard time sitting for this family in the future. Bring a first aid kit and some fun babysitting games (check with the parents first to make sure they approve) and ideally, everyone will have a great night!

Find Work as a Babysitter with a Free Classified Job Listing

Everyone can do with some extra cash these days, and there are many parents who have need of an hour or two of free time every week.  If you’re got any experience with babies and small kids, why not try to find work as a babysitter by posting a free classified job listing in your local newspaper?

Before you place your free classified job listing you should do a little bit of preparation work.  First of all do you have a police record?  If not, then ask your local police station if they can issue you with some kind of paper to state that you have a clean record.  Our culture is such that parents have to be careful who they trust to take care of their children and so if you have a letter that shows you haven’t been convicted of any crimes it not only shows that you are law abiding, but also that you knew parent would take that into consideration.

Another thing you could do in order to make your free classified job listing stand out is to take a First Aid course such as those offered by the American Red Cross.  If you can state in your free classified job ad that you are certified in both First Aid and CPR then you are likely to be contacted by more parents because they know if their child does have an accident in your care then you will know what to do about it.

Does your local community college run any other courses that are particularly aimed at potential babysitters?  This could include how to baby-proof your own home and how to keep small children occupied on rainy days!  They may also include baby and child related nutritional advice.  By putting some effort into gaining “official” training for your babysitting business, you will show parents you are serious about what you do and reassure them that their child will be safe in your care.

Once you have some official papers that support the fact that you’d be an ideal babysitter, you need to think about how much time you could give this before the phone starts to ring.  Once the ad is placed in your local free classified job listings you need to be ready to take bookings.  So consider when you can fit babysitting into your current schedule.  Would you be able to babysit every day?  Are there certain times of the day when you aren’t able to babysit?  Do you want to do night time babysitting or day time only?  Where will you take care of the children you babysit – in your home, or only in theirs?  What will you charge per hour and will that differ depending on time of day, age of child and how many hours are required?

Having assembled some documentation that you know what you’re doing, identified what business hours you offer and how much you’re going to charge, you’re all set to place that important free classified job listing.  Your babysitting business is about to be launched!
